The Bioprocess Engineering Chair group teaches and develops new bio-based processes for production and bio-refinery of pharmaceuticals, healthy food ingredients, bulk chemicals and biofuels. The challenge is to make high-quality products in a sustainable and economic way, to avoid overexploitation of natural resources and the environment and maximize the chances of utilization by existing and new bio-based companies.
Chair of Bioprocess Engineering: Prof. Rene Wijffels
Rene Wijffels is chairman of the BPE group since 2007. He is coordinator of the bio-refinery research at Wageningen UR (IPOP bio-refinery) and of the team photosynthetic microorganisms in the Dutch Biosolar Cells program. He is scientific director of AlgaePARC, a pilot plant facility for microalgae research at Wageningen UR.
